Should I buy a house for my child at college?
Many parents are purchasing homes near universities for their offspring, but is it a wise investment? University towns, old and new alike, have experienced impressive house-price growth over the past decade, so buying a property for your child to live in during studies may be tempting.
Parents with a reasonable deposit can take advantage of record low mortgage rates and record high rents to let out at least one other room in the property in order to bring down their child’s accommodation costs. If house prices rise they may even turn a profit, particularly if they are able to hold on to the property for longer than the duration of their child’s course and let it out to the next generation of students, to avoid short-term fluctuations in values.
